Ok here me out on this!
I found a billion $ savings for BC Ferries @BCFerries to pass on better service to passengers not just for the Sunshine Coast BC Canada but all routes.
Here’s how I arrived at this. Please read on…… Let me know if its cRaZy thinking????
I wish I could get this to the right people in the media and BC Ferries management if it makes sense!!! Feed back appreciated…. It seems to good to be true! SHARE if you think I make a valid point. It’s up to us! Obviously we can’t rely on BC Ferries management anymore
BACKGROUND (how I arrived at a billion $$$)
From what I understand, Deborah Marshall, BC Ferries Communications Officer, said on the news the other night, in response to the 12% fare increase in the next 3 years, it would cost $10 million per vessel to convert to liquefied natural gas (LNG).
So if they had converted the 35 vessels in the fleet ten years ago, at $10 million each the cost would have been >
$10 million times 35 = $350 million. (In 2002 dollars!)
(I’m assuming even the little tiny ferries would also cost $10 million as well which I doubt).
Deborah Marshall further said it would save them I believe it was $150 million a year in fuel costs if they converted to LNG. (might have been $200 mill ?)
So with that in mind, my calculations say the vessel conversion costs at $150 million, would have paid for themselves in 2 1/2 years.
Over 10 years times $150 million in fuel savings equals an incredible $1,500,000,000.
YES a billion & a half dollars!
SUBTRACT conversion costs ($150 mill) from fuel savings and that’s a still a whopping $1,350,000,000. (billion) saved that could have been used to improve service and pass on to passengers.
Just saying!
Unless I am totally off my rockers! (It been known to happen to intuitive visionary people *grin*).
Let’s get 500 shares as a goal. Go to the facebook discussion if you prefer and share there!

Your right that by those numbers it is a no brainer. The question is was her calculations conditional. For example “Converting to LNG would save us $150 million a year in fuel costs IF LNG in sufficient quantities was available and the infrastructure to deliver it to the ferries existed.”
It could very well be that the supplies are not available, or that selling the LNG makes more money then the money saved on ferry fuel, or that the infrastructure required would be an additional cost not factored into the calculations.
I am not saying that it is not a good idea, just saying there are probably other factors at work.
I have fully agree with the concept of conversion. Two issues though — first, there is the issue of actually producing LNG itself — where, who pays and how would it be distributed. The second is how to ensure that it would be conventional and not “fracked” gas. The issue of “fracking” is far from settled IMHO.
