Cinco de Mayo Events and Mexican Food Drink Recipes

May 5th is Cinco de Mayo a celebration of everything Mexican. What started out as a commemoration of the Mexican army’s short lived victory over French forces in 1862 has pretty much morphed into a modern day yearly fiesta.

Its a great excuse to dress up and go out, cook up some amazing Mexican cuisine for family and friends, or go out to a Mexican restaurant.

If you love going out to dine, Yelp has a great list of the most popular Mexican Restaurants in the Vancouver BC area.

I also found a few big events celebrating Cinco de Mayo in Vancouver and the Lower Mainland.

Lucha Libre: A Night of Mexican Wrestling
Lucha Libre: A Night of Mexican Wrestling

On Friday May 8th at the Commodore Ballroom is Lucha Libre: A Night of Mexican Wrestling which bills itself as the “biggest fiesta of the year in celebration of Cinco de Mayo.” Masked ECCW (Elite Championship Canadian Wrestling) luchadores will delight fans with a full evening of high flying, rapid sequence matches, plus a few colourful surprises along the way.

skydive vancouver

If adrenaline sports gets you going, Skydive Vancouver has an annual Cinco de Mayo skydiving event all day on Saturday May 2nd in Abbotsford which includes a mustache contest, tacos and mojitos. Although I wonder how your mustache stays on?

If dancing is more your thing, Celebrities Nightclub on Davie Street is hosting a Cinco de Mayo “extravaganza” on Tuesday May 5th billed as the “spiciest” Cinco De Mayo celebration to date. They are offering prizes for Biggest Sombrero; Most Outrageous Moustache; and the Group with Most Matching Ponchos.

Salsa Dance Classes

Another fun dancing event is a weekly Saturday night Salsa & Latin dance night featuring Salsa, Merengue, Bachata, Cha-cha-cha, Cumbia & more… hosted by the Hot Salsa Dance Zone  at various locations including Vancouver, Coquitlam, Surrey and New Westminster. They even offer dance classes!

easy mexican recipes

If you just want to stay home there are lots of great easy Mexican recipes on the internet that can be made in 20 minutes. Go to your local dollar store and see what they have with a Latin theme to make your dinner extra spicy and fun.

And let’s not forget all those terrific Mexican drinks like Margaritas! You can even make them non-alcoholic. I found hundreds of sites on Google about easy Mexican drinks.

Have fun and Happy Cinco de Mayo!
